If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need.

When God created the church (a new creation) in Christ, Christ put it under authority with a New Commandment. Because of the discipleship context, I suggest that the newness of the commandment pertains to this. Jesus eventually gave his life for his friends/disciples, this self sacrifice , should move his followers to have the same self sacrificing love for one another. Having this see post type of love Jesus says, will distinguish them “among men, that your My disciples.” 12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have
loved you.

It’s a love that forces us to grow — we can’t love like Jesus did without our hearts changing. All of God’s laws demonstrate God’s love. God’s law, including the two great commandments and all of the 10 Commandments, are a law of love. He was aware that His work on earth was rapidly coming to an end. He was very much conscious of His imminent suffering, death and resurrection, and His eventual departure to His Father in heaven. His affection for them is clear in the following verses, which He also used to teach them—and His Church down the ages—a lesson in Christian love.

But you can’t bail out on the commandment to love others because you lack feelings for them. I’m sure that if Jesus had followed His feelings, He would not have gone to the cross! But it also was based on obedience to His Father’s commandment. So here we have Jesus giving us an acted out pattern of love.

Thankfully, we do find the overarching theme of “love” in the Bible. God’s love for His creation and desire for us to always remain with Him drove him to sacrifice his own Son, in the name of love, as punishment for our sin. When God created everything in Genesis 1, He then put it under his authority with two commands. When God created the nation of Israel, He put it under new commands.

The costliness of love means that we have to sacrifice our selfishness for others. The caring aspect of love means that we should never be calloused or rude. The commandment facet of love the advantage means that we do it in obedience to our Savior, who gave Himself for us. The conspicuous part of love means that it doesn’t consist just of nice thoughts, but of visible actions.
