Men treated with radiation therapy for prostate cancer have an increased risk of having bladder and/or gastrointestinal cancer. The way the radiation therapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated. External radiation therapy, internal radiation therapy, and radiopharmaceutical therapy are used to treat prostate cancer. Active surveillance is closely following a patient’s condition without giving any treatment unless there are changes in test results.
For nearly all cases of non-recurrent prostate cancer, active surveillance will be included as part of your treatment before and/or after additional treatments. They grow so slowly that they probably will not cause symptoms, spread, or shorten your life in any way. Some forms of hormonal therapy are effective in the management of metastatic hormone’refractory prostate cancer. When the cancer is confined to the prostate gland, long-term prognosis is excellent. If the cancer has spread to your bones, medicines called bisphosphonates may be used. In particular, prostate cancer needs the hormone testosterone to grow. Some hospitals now offer new minimally invasive treatments if radiotherapy fails to work, sometimes as part of a clinical trial. Radiotherapy can also be used to slow the progression of prostate cancer that’s spread and relieve symptoms.
