Shingles Vaccine Age:
The shingles vaccine is safe and effective in preventing both shingles and related complications, such as PHN. Talk to your healthcare provider about getting the shingles vaccine, especially if you are 50 years old or over or are immunocompromised. The CDC state that two doses of Shingrix are more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and PHN, and protection remains above 85% for at least 4 years after receiving the vaccination. This is consistent with other studies showing that the effectiveness of Shingrix ranges from 91.3% to 96.6% in preventing shingles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the Shingrix vaccine for older adults. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it for individuals aged 18 years and older who have an increased risk of shingles.

It’s also true for adults 19 and older who have weakened immune systems due to a condition or medicine. Shingles is a common disease ‘ almost 1 in 3 people will get shingles in their lifetime. The good news is that the shingles vaccine, called Shingrix’, is more than 90% effective at preventing shingles. Two doses of the Shingrix vaccine prevents shingles and PHN approximately 90% of the time, and the protection stays strong for at least seven years. In adults who have weakened immune systems, the vaccine can be less effective, in the range of 68%’91%, depending on their underlying condition. Shingrix is currently the most recent and effective shingles vaccine available.
If vaccination before immunosuppression is not possible, providers should consider timing vaccination when the immune response is likely to be most robust. Due to manufacturing processes and commissioning arrangements, some vaccines may only be available in limited quantities or batches of vaccine may be subject to delay. Therefore, it is recommended that orders are placed with more than one manufacturer to ensure providers receive sufficient stock. Shingles can be very painful and tends to affect people more commonly as they get older. This can be because your immune system is weakened by increasing age, by stress or by a range of medical conditions and treatments. The shingles vaccine is used only as a way to prevent shingles. It’s not intended to treat people who currently have the disease. Although people do not die from shingles, they can be severely hurt by it.

Some pharmacies offer shingles vaccines on a walk-in basis. Check with your healthcare professional or local pharmacy to be sure. If you had chickenpox earlier in life, the virus remains inactive in your nervous system until much later in life or when your immune system becomes weakened.
A person with shingles can pass the varicella-zoster virus to anyone who isn’t immune to chickenpox. This usually occurs through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. Once infected, though, the person will develop chickenpox rather than shingles. Varicella-zoster is part of a group of viruses called herpes viruses. But individuals covered under Medicare prescription drug plans, or Part D, will have their vaccines covered. Evidence also indicates that older adults can safely receive the Shingrix and flu vaccine at the same time. Researchers found that taking the vaccines together did not impact the effectiveness of either vaccine. Anyone with allergies to Shingrix ingredients should also avoid the vaccine. People who experience severe allergic reactions to the first dose should not get the second dose of Shingrix. The CDC recommends that everyone aged 50 or older get Shingrix.
With the currently authorized shingles vaccine, Shingrix, you won’t be contagious. The old vaccine, Zostavax, used a weakened form of the live varicella-zoster virus. Therefore, people worried about spreading the disease to the people around them.

The shingles vaccine is recommended for some older adults and people with a severely weakened immune system. You do not need to do anything to prepare for the shingles vaccine, other than make a plan to get it if recommended for you.
