Later, Madeleine describes a dream she had to Scottie, who recognizes the location she’s depicting as Mission San Juan Bautista. It infuriates Scottie that she can’t wholly be the woman she played, just as it infuriated Hitchcock his muses were not as flawless and elegant in real life as they were in front of his camera. In October 2014, a new 4K restoration was presented at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. Scottie, halted on the steps by his fear of heights, sees Madeleine plunge to her death. There, he tells her he must re-enact the event that led to his madness. He tells her that he now knows that “Madeleine” and Judy are the same person, and Judy was Gavin’s mistress before being cast aside just as Carlotta had been. He forces her up the bell tower and makes her admit her deceit. Judy confesses that Gavin paid her to impersonate a “possessed” Madeleine and begs Scottie to forgive her. He embraces Judy, but a shadowy figure ‘ a nun investigating the noise ‘ rises from the tower’s trapdoor, startling her.
Scottie follows Madeleine to the grave of Carlotta Valdes (1831’1857) at the Mission San Francisco de As’s and the Legion of Honor art museum, where she gazes at the Portrait of Carlotta.

The next day, Madeleine stops to deliver a letter of gratitude to Scottie, and they spend the day together. They travel to Muir Woods and Cypress Point on 17-Mile Drive, where they embrace. Scottie identifies its setting as Mission San Juan Bautista, Carlotta’s childhood home. He drives her there, and they express their love for each other.

Scottie, bereaved once again but cured of his fear of heights, stands on the ledge while the nun rings the mission bell. The film was shot on location in the city of San Francisco, California, as well as in Mission San Juan Bautista, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Cypress Point on 17-Mile Drive, and Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Stewart, is easy to sympathize with as the good-natured guy who learns too late that he’s been set up. Kim Novak is also eerily convincing in a difficult role, and Barbara Bel Geddes is irresistible as Midge Wood, the woman Scottie would be in love with if he knew what was good for him. A painstaking two-year restoration project saved this movie for future generations. The colors are dazzling, and Bernard Herrmann’s extraordinary score is crisp and haunting.
This version, however, removes some of the “excessive” Foley sound that was added in the 1996 restoration. Scorcese’s connection to these long driving sequences in Vertigo is unsurprising if you’ve seen Taxi Driver, a film filled with scenes echoing Vertigo as the protagonist Travis Bickle scours the streets from his car. Then there’s additional reading the showcase of experimental animation concocted by the great Saul Bass (a master of title sequences). It’s mesmerizing and inventive, seeming to bring the audience into the entrancement that will capture Madeleine and Scottie. These themes are what make Vertigo such a fascinating movie elevated beyond just a captivating thriller.
